Arguably the best showcase for club football in the world, the English Premier League (which kicks off on Saturday) has brought us some of the most spectacular goals ever scored. Here’s our all time top ten

Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United) v Portsmouth
Ronaldo’s deliciously deceptive free kick left Portsmouth stopper David James a mere spectator as it soared and dipped at pace below the upright. Great technique from the Portugese primadonna.

Matt Le Tissier (Southampton) v Newcastle
Le Tissier juggles the ball with the dexterity of a circus performer, back-heeling the ball over his own head, swiping away the ball from one defender and lobbing another before clinically beating the keeper. Sketchy? Probably. Great to watch? You bet.

Paolo Di Canio (West Ham) v Wimbledon
Di Canio’s upright scissors-kick is a YouTube favourite. And rightly so. The Italian adjusts his body superbly to fire as unorthodox a volley as you will ever see – well, from an Italian anyway.

Dennis Bergkamp (Arsenal) v Newcastle United
Dutch maestro Bergkamp receives the ball with his back to goal, turns his marker inside out with the deftest of touches and caps things off with an ice-cool finish. He may have been nicknamed Beavis (after the MTV cartoon character) by his teammates but this man was a genius!

David Beckham (Manchester United) v Wimbledon
David Beckham cemented his reputation as Manchester United latest boy wonder with this spectacular long-distance effort, embarrassing out-of-position Wimbledon keeper, Neil Sullivan. Amazingly, he recently repeated the feat for LA Galaxy.

Eric Cantona (Manchester United) v Sunderland
Cantona’s sublime chip is the climax of a great team move. Watch his goal celebration as he stands with the rigidity of a Napoleonic general, stiff-backed and proud, basking in the glory of his teammates, the fans, the whole world.

Gustavo Poyet (Chelsea) v Stoke
Nice build-up play from Chelsea and a clever lob pass by Gianfranco Zola sets up Poyet’s stunning finish. Poyet even gives Zola a kiss for his brilliant assist. How sweet!

Didier Drogba (Chelsea) v Everton
Chest down, swivel and … get in there, you beauty! When you’ve been scoring goals as long as Didier Drogba has, you only need a striker’s instinct to know where the target is. Drogba hardly looked at his target before unleashing this blistering 30-yard volley. A class act.

Xavi Alonso (Liverpool) v Newcastle
Alonso is almost in a different postcode when he hits this outrageously ambitious screamer. The goal-keeper should have saved it but you can’t fault Alonso’s audacity.

Carlos Tevez (Manchester City) v Stoke
The English Premiership may never have been home to Roberto Carlos but it does have Carlos Tevez. The Argentinian emulated the Brazilian’s legendary banana kick against France with this swerving stunner against Stoke.
