Omar stresses Pretoria's expertise in events
Abu Dhabi: The South African ambassador to the UAE has moved to reassure fans travelling to this year's World Cup about safety in the country.
Around 360,000 foreign arrivals are expected in the country during the tournament with security a major talking point among the visitors.
But Yacoob Omar said the country has drawn on its experience of organising other major sporting events to ensure visitors have a memorable stay.
"South Africa is experienced with hosting major sporting events, and the government has ‘jacked up' its security arrangements," he said. "The entire police force is to be on duty during the month, and it is being advised by security experts from Germany and France. So World Cup visitors should not be worried about security, especially in areas where the games are being held," Omar said.
"This is the next big thing for South Africa after Nelson Mandela's release from prison, and we are all very excited to be hosting the event. South Africa has staged the Rugby World Cup and last years also played host to the IPL cricket at short notice."
The envoy said the excitement in South Africa was palpable after visiting the country in April.
