One insider suggested that there’s confidence a deal can be done when his contract expires
Saudi Pro League officials are confident that Mohamed Salah will consider a move to the Kingdom if Liverpool fall short of his contract demands, according to The Telegraph.
Liverpool have presented the Egyptian forward with an offer to extend his eight-year spell at Anfield, which is set to end this summer. However, while discussions remain ongoing, sources close to the Saudi Pro League insist that Salah remains intrigued by the prospect of a future in the Middle East.
One senior insider suggested that, while Salah is currently focused on Liverpool’s offer, there’s confidence a deal can be done when his contract expires at the end of June.
There had been optimism that Salah could join Al-Hilal in time for the Club World Cup in the United States, especially after FIFA approved a special transfer window from June 1–10, which has been adopted by the Premier League. But regardless of Salah’s final decision, a pre-tournament transfer is no longer on the cards.
Al-Hilal, fresh off winning the Saudi title last season and having parted ways with Neymar earlier this year, had identified Salah as the marquee signing to lead their next phase of growth. They view the Club World Cup as a key stage to showcase Saudi football, and Salah, with his global profile and deep cultural ties to the region, remains an ideal ambassador.
Liverpool famously turned down a £150 million bid from Al-Ittihad in 2023, and Salah has remained a top target ever since. The 32-year-old is now weighing whether to continue his legacy at Liverpool or make a switch that would guarantee immense financial reward but likely remove him from the European elite.
With 27 goals in the Premier League this season and nine matches remaining, he’s enjoying one of his best campaigns since arriving on Merseyside.
Salah is just one goal away from surpassing Sergio Agüero as the Premier League’s top-scoring non-English player. He also sits third on Liverpool’s all-time scoring list with 243 goals, trailing only Roger Hunt (285) and Ian Rush (346).
The duration of the proposed extension at Liverpool is thought to be one of the sticking points, particularly given his age. The same cautious approach applies to Virgil van Dijk, now 33, with the club content to avoid rushing either decision.
