Professional football league body disbanded

General Authority of Youth and Sports Welfare has disbanded the UAE Football League

Last updated:

Dubai: The General Authority of Youth and Sports Welfare (GAYSW) has, in a surprise move, disbanded the UAE Football League (UFL) which was responsible for running the fledgling professional league in the country.

A statement on the official UFL website said: "The UFL has received official notification today from the General Authority of Youth and Sports Welfare (GAYSW) that the organisation will be disbanded due to a violation over its official name.

"The notification advised that the UAE FA Board of Directors will assume responsibility for the League's rights and obligations towards the UAE's professional clubs for a one-month transitory period."

Charges denied

When contacted by Gulf News, a senior official of the UAE Football Association said the UFL had failed to "seek investment in football and assure the development of football through the various national squads," charges that were strongly denied by Dr Tarek Al Tayer, chairman of the UFL.

"We don't need the UAE FA to decide how good a job we've done," he countered.
