London: Watch out Pep Guardiola and Manchester City, the Red army is coming. Jurgen Klopp and the Anfield gang are finally going to do it. Win the Premier League, that is.
It is bizarrely unfathomable to think that a team of Liverpool’s size have never won the English title since its rebrand back in 1992.
I think that is about to change. We have seen greats such as Robbie Fowler, Luis Suarez, Michael Owen, Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher and Fernando Torres all grace the famous arena of Anfield in the red shirt, but they were found lacking in support to get them over the line.
Manchester United fans always smirk when they remember their legendary goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, who helped them win five Premier League titles. He had a son who grew up and then got his hands on the same trophy as his dad as Leicester City’s No. 1. Meanwhile, Liverpool’s faithful have looked on enviously
There are the familiar names on the Premier League list. United, Chelsea, Arsenal and City.
But then there are Blackburn Rovers and Leicester.
If I were a Liverpool fan I would be outraged the famous name is not on that list.
Worry no more as Klopp has the key.
It is not Mohammad Salah. It is not Sadio Mane. It is a team.
From Alisson Becker between the sticks, Virgil van Dijk at the back alongside Andrew Robertson and Dejan Lovren. The most astute signing of Xherdan Shaqiri to complement the already talented midfield. And the most enviable frontline going.
Salah, Mane, Roberto Firmino, Shaqiri, Jordan Henderson, Daniel Sturridge … It is like City 2.0. The goals will come from everywhere.
Given City’s dominance last term, the only team to step up have been Liverpool and they have the beating of Guardiola’s men this time around.
Chelsea look good for third and I think Arsenal will take fourth place. As for United, Jose Mourinho is talking himself out of a job again. He belittles his players when he should be backing them. Europa League beckons and a new manager too.
Tottenham Hotspur’s lack of transfer activity will see them dwindle. Harry Kane will get injured, Dele Alli will lose his head and Mauricio Pochettino will face the axe.
All the while, Liverpool will pick up the points and put one of football’s biggest albatrosses to bed.
The future is bright. The future is red.
