Manchester: Pep Guardiola is expected to sign at least a one-year contract extension at the end of the season.

Guardiola is out of contract at the end of next season but there is optimism he will pen an extension that ties him to the Etihad Stadium until at least June 2020.

City’s hierarchy were talking privately about wanting to keep Guardiola for a decade long before Sunday’s coronation and would like him to sign a much longer-term deal. They have talked previously about the freedom Guardiola has been given in Manchester and how the job is far removed from the acute political pressure that came with managing Barcelona and in many ways Bayern Munich.

Guardiola is determined to finish the final five games of the season with a flourish as he bids to smash the record Premier League points haul — set by Chelsea in 2004/05 — by becoming the first to reach the magical 100-point barrier. But preparations for next season are already well under way, with City targeting three signings, not least a defensive midfielder and versatile forward.
