Glasgow: Craig Gordon has warned his Celtic teammates they must show improvements on the bigger stage or their places will be at risk.

The 34-year-old goalkeeper has been an integral part of the Celtic side that is on a record-breaking 67-match unbeaten run domestically.

Despite such impressive dominance in Scotland, the Scottish champions have struggled to make an impact in Europe ending their Champions League campaign with a disappointing 1-0 home defeat to Anderlecht on Tuesday.

However, Anderlecht’s victory was not sufficient for them to leapfrog Celtic into third spot and gain a place in the last 32 of the Europa League.

But Gordon knows manager Brendan Rodgers expects better from his players than the single victory and five defeats recorded in their group.

“We have to be performing at the highest level, if not, at a club of this size, then you run the risk of being replaced,” Gordon admitted.

“We need to do as well as we can in these big games to try and stay in the team.”

Celtic could hardly have a tougher task on their return to domestic duty this Sunday as they make the trip to Easter Road to face Hibernian.

The Edinburgh side, managed by former Celtic boss Neil Lennon, came close to ending the visitors long unbeaten record at the end of September when Rodgers’s men needed a late Tom Rogic strike to claim a share of the points at Parkhead.

“They (Hibs) are a good team and a difficult side to play against on their day. If they get it right then they have a lot of players in their team who can win matches and score goals,” said Gordon.

“It’s one we will have to be at our best for, especially away from home, to make sure we play our game and impose our game on Hibs.

“The games against Hibs always seem to fall after a European game and it’s up to us to make sure we come back and recover in time to play the next match.”

Celtic could find their seven point lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership reduced by the time they take to the field on Sunday.

Third-placed Aberdeen will have the first chance to cut the gap as they take on Dundee on Friday, boosted by the news manager Derek McInnes rejected the overtures of Rangers to stay with them.

Rangers, who are in second after back-to-back wins over McInnes’ side, will have to go back to the drawing board as their six-week search for a replacement for Pedro Caxinha continues.

Interim manager Graeme Murty is expected to once again lead the side when they host Ross County at Ibrox on Saturday looking to record a third win in a row for the first time since December last year.
