Blues in talks over handing Belgian defender a 12-month contract extension
Manchester, United Kingdom: Manchester City have offered Dedryck Boyata a massive 133 per cent pay rise to stay at the club, despite the fact he has played just one Premier League game this season.
City are in advanced talks with their 23-year-old defender over a 12-month contract extension, which will see his current £15,000-per-week (Dh93,505) deal rise to £35,000 per week.
Boyata has played just 55 minutes of top-flight football under Manuel Pellegrini, but City are desperate to keep the Belgian international, as he still counts as a homegrown player, having come to England when he was 16.
City need eight homegrown players in their squad each season and fear they will struggle to meet the Premier League’s quota next campaign with English players Micah Richards, Joleon Lescott and Jack Rodwell all set to leave this summer.
Boyata may think twice about signing as City have Porto defender Eliaquim Mangala and Arsenal right back Bacary Sagna in their sights, transfers which would push Boyata even further down the defensive pecking order.
Meanwhile, City are chasing West Ham child prodigy Omari Forson — after the nine-year-old played a starring role for the Hammers Under 10 and Under 11 teams.
