Leganes,Spain: Leganes will have to wait at least another week to assure themselves of staying in the top tier of Spanish football after managing only a 0-0 draw against 18th-place Deportivo La Coruna here.

Clinging to their faint hope of avoiding relegation, the visitors dominated the opening 10 minutes of Friday’s La Liga match at the Butarque Stadium in suburban Madrid and it was only Lucas Perez’s inability to finish that prevented Depor from taking a 2-0 lead.

The initiative then passed to Leganes, led by El Zhar, who narrowly missed from open play before threatening again on a set piece.

The hosts started the second half much better than the first and grew in confidence as the match entered the final 30 minutes, but the goal never came and the contest ended scoreless. Leganes, with 40 points from 34 matches, are 12 above Depor, who in turn trail 17th place Levante by six points.

In Bundeliga, Borussia Moenchengladbach defeated relegation-troubled Wolfsburg 3-0 on Friday to give a glimmer of hope to Hamburger SV and Cologne in their fight against the drop.

Goals from Lars Stindl, Raffael and Christoph Kramer put ‘Gladbach in command before the break, and Wolfsburg found no answer in the second half as it remained in relegation danger.

Wolfsburg will finish the 31st round in the relegation zone if Mainz and Freiburg claim points in their respective games against Augsburg and Hamburg.

Wolfsburg’s defeat means Hamburg and Cologne, eight and nine points from safety, cannot be mathematically relegated this weekend, even if Cologne loses to visiting Schalke on Sunday.
