Khalil saves UAE from disappointment

Khalil saves UAE from disappointment with last minute goal

Last updated:

Hanoi: A goal in injury time by substitute Faisal Khalil helped UAE end their disappointing Asian Cup campaign on a high note as they beat Gulf rivals Qatar 2-1.

The result means that co-hosts Vietnam have booked a shock place in quarter final of the Asian Cup, and that two of the strongest Gulf sides (UAE are the Gulf Cup champions while Qatar won gold at the Asian Games) have crashed out at the first hurdle.

Qatar opened the scoring three minutes before the break when striker Sebastian Quintana was brought down by Rashid Abdul Rahman in the penalty area.

The Uruguay born striker picked himself up to score from the spot.

Saeed Al Kaas equalized for UAE in the 59th minute when he headed home from close range from Ahmad Mubarak's cross.

Faisal Khalil's injury time winner, when he headed home after the Qatari keeper spilled a free-kick, ensured the UAE at least took home bragging rights between the two.
