Jorge Sampaoli to lead Chile until 2018 World Cup

Argentine coach dispels rumours he plans to stand down after next year’s Copa America

Santiago: Chile’s Argentine coach Jorge Sampaoli on Tuesday confirmed he would coach them until the 2018 World Cup.

“I’ve decided to remain the Chile coach for the 2015 Copa America ... and up to qualifying for the 2018 World Cup [and finals],” the 54-year-old said.

Rumours had begun to circulate in Chile that Sampaoli might stand down after next year’s Copa America, hosted by Chile, after he had spoken about his dream of managing Argentina.

Chile were agonisingly beaten on penalties by the hosts in the last 16 at the World Cup in Brazil last month after having come through a group that saw 2010 champions Spain go out of the competition.
