Dubai: The world of football is in mourning as Liverpool’s forward, Diogo Jota, tragically lost his life in a car crash on July 3, just two weeks after his wedding.

The football star was in the car with his brother Andre, also a professional footballer, when their car veered off the road and burst into flames in the province of Zamora. Reports suggest the vehicle’s tyre may have blown out, causing the accident.

Jota, 28, recently got married to his childhood sweetheart, Rute Cardoso two weeks ago. The couple share three children together.

Over the years, several celebrities tragically lost their lives in freak car accidents. Some of them include:

Ben Hollioake

Benjamin Caine Hollioake, the upcoming English cricketer who played for Surrey County Cricket Club and the England cricket team in the 90s, died in in a tragic car crash in 2002.

The cricketer, was in the car with his girlfriend when the car crashed, killing the 24-year-old and seriously injuring his girlfriend, in Australia.

According to reports, officers ruled out alcohol and speeding as a cause of the crash and were examining if a patch of oil on the road was the cause of his death.

Andrew Symonds

Legendary Australian cricketer, Andrew Symonds, died in 2022 following a single-car crash in Queensland, Australia.

The cricketer, who was 46-years-old, was alone in his car when the accident occurred. According to reports it was unclear why his car veered off the road, which caused it to roll down an embankment.

His death came after the shocking news of fellow Australian cricketers, Rod Marsh and Shane Warne’s death in March that year.

Paul Walker

Paul William Walker IV, was a famous American actor best known for his role as Brian O’Conner in the Fast and Furious franchise.

In November 2013, Walker was in the car along with his friend, who was behind the wheel. The car sped out of control, causing them crash into a cement light pole and bursting into flames.

Princess Diana of Wales

One of the most cherished members from the royal family, Princess Diana of Wales, and the mother of Prince William and Prince Harry, died in a car accident in August 1997, at the age of 37.

According to reports, the crash occurred due to the high speed of the vehicle, leading it to losing control, and crashing.

James Dean

American actor and a teen heartthrob in the 1950s, James Dean who starred in just three films over his five-year career, died in a tragic car accident on a freeway in September, 1955.

Dean, who was known for his love of racing as well, crashed into another car on the freeway at very high speeds, dying immediately upon impact.

Shankar Nag

Indian actor, screenwriter and director in the Kannada film industry, Shankar Nag died in September 1990.

The actor, known for his iconic role in Kannada film Malgudi Days, died in a car crash on the outskirts of Davanagere, during the filming of his film Jokumaraswamy. His wife and daughter who were in the car with him, were injured but survived the accident.

Cliff Burton

Bassist for one of the biggest metal bands in the music industry, Metallica, Clifford Lee Burton or Cliff, died in 1986.

The musician, who was on tour supporting Metallica’s album Master of Puppets, died following a bus crash in Sweden in September 1986.

Grace Kelly

Famous American actress in the 1950s, Grace Kelly, known for her role in Dial M for Murder and more, died in a tragic car accident in 1982, at the age of 52.

The actress, who later became Princess Grace of Monaco after marrying Prince Rainier III of Monaco in 1956, suffered a stroke while driving with her younger daughter Stephanie, causing her lose control and drive off a mountainside.

Monisha Unni

Young South-Indian actress and dancer, Monisha, died at the age of 21 after the car she was in, collided with a bus in Kerala.

Monisha, who was in the car with her mother, Sreedevi Unni survived the accident.
