Assuncao Adds Flair To Al Ahli
Al Ahli threw down the gauntlet to their rivals for the new Etisalat League season as they last night unveiled their new coach and three summer signings, among them former Roma and Brazil midfielder, Marcos Assuncao.
Aside from the prized catch of Assuncao, Al Ahli also paraded fellow Brazilian Clederson Cesar de Souza and French recruit Gregory du Frenice, who tranferred from relegated Dubai Club at the end of last season.
While last season was forgettable for the 2005-06 champions, there was a sense of anticipation in the air at Al Ahli Stadium yesterday as the new arrivals took to the pitch before the fans together with their new coach, former Tunisian national team technical adviser Yousef Al Zawawi.
The biggest cheers greeted dead-ball specialist Assuncao, who made it clear why he came to the UAE.
"I have not come here to finish my career. I have come here to do well with Al Ahli and leave as a winner because I wish to finish my career in Brazil," said Assuncao.
"Of course money plays a part in it, as it does for any professional in any field. But I also want to experience the culture here. I have heard a lot about Dubai through the media and I am very happy to be here."
