Abu Dhabi: Al Wahda coach Laurentiu Reghecampf has urged his players to put their heads down and keep working hard following his side’s 3-0 win over Al Wasl in the Arabian Gulf Cup Group A fixture at the Zayed Sports City Stadium on Monday.
Al Wahda’s Brazilian recruit Leonardo de Souza fired a double and 20-year-old Yahya Al Ghassani completed the tally. “I am happy with the game of my players today as the weather made it very difficult. We scored very fast and I hope the team will keep the level for the next games,” said a delighted-looking Reghecampf, whose side now have two wins in two matches.
All three goals had come in the first session and the coach was not very pleased with the way his wards played, having missed scoring opportunities in the second session.
“I think we have to be more attentive when we have the chance to score more goals. It is important to score because against a team like Al Wasl, with good players, they sometimes comeback into the game,” said Reghecampf, adding that the testing conditions made it difficult for his wards to maintain the same level of play after the switchover.
“I would never ask my players to stay back and defend those three goals. It happened only because the weather was testing,” revealed Reghecampf, who is well aware of the importance of maintaining the focus and not getting carried away by the initial success.
“Remember how we played the first half of last year. We played many games in the same way. We had the players for this game and they have good technique and speed. We have to make the best from these players,” said Reghecampf, who was also pretty pleased with the squad at his disposal.
“It is good for a coach when you have a squad like that. We have 20 to 21 ready players. The players from the national team are a little bit tired but it is normal. They have played many games but I’m happy that they are in good shape and have no injury worries.
“In the coming days, they will be in good level too. We started good but we have to put our heads down, try to concentrate and work more. We have to keep this level going.”
