Sydney: Spanish star David Villa rescued a 1-1 draw for Melbourne City with his second goal in two Australian A-League games on Sunday.

The World Cup winner struck a fabulous equaliser from the edge of the box in the 87th minute to share the points with the Newcastle Jets.

Villa, who is on a 10-game loan from New York City, earned Melbourne City a draw against Sydney FC with a debut A-League strike the previous weekend.

“He needs only a little moment,” City’s Dutch coach John van’t Schip said of Villa, who played the entire game after coming on as a second-half substitute in Sydney last week.

“He’s always going to be dangerous and find spaces.

“We had a plan of trying to keep him on the pitch as long as possible ... so it’s very good he played 90 minutes.”

The Jets’ Ecuador striker Edson Montano had threatened to upstage Villa, breaking the deadlock with a bullet-like header in the 62nd minute.

Perth Glory lead after the opening two rounds following a late 3-2 win over defending champions Brisbane Roar at home on Sunday.

Glory’s new Irish striker Andy Keogh clinched victory with his second goal of the game in stoppage time after converting a 49th-minute penalty.

Keogh now has three goals for Glory and shapes as an early contender for this season’s golden boot.

The loss left Brisbane Roar pointless after the opening two games along with AFC Champions League finalists Western Sydney Wanderers, who lost 3-2 to Sydney FC in the Sydney derby on Saturday.

Wanderers have home advantage in the first leg of the ACL final against Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal next Saturday.
