Dubai: The Board of Dubai Sports Council (DSC) has approved an eight per cent increase in the organisation’s budget for 2014.

Chaired by Mattar Al Tayer, Deputy Chairman DSC and Chairman of the Executive Office, the DSC Board met earlier this week and approved a budget of Dh442.1 million for the year, rising from the Dh411.49 million allocated for 2013.

“We owe our thanks and deep gratitude to His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and to Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council, for their permanent support and generous commitment to the sports sector in Dubai,” Al Tayer said.

“Today Dubai is known the world over as the sporting destination of choice for most of the top sportspeople in the industry. So it is important that we build on this success and try to do even better.”

New categories

After reviewing several reports, the DSC Board re-constituted three committees — the Strategic Plan Committee, the Sports Development Committee and the Investment and Projects Committee.

The meeting also decided to include several new categories in the annual awards for clubs, namely Best Junior Sportsman, Best Common Project, Best Club (best football company in social responsibility field), Best Initiative, Best Football Company in Marketing and Investment, Best Beach Soccer Team and Best Women’s Sport Club.

There was also a discussion on the Ghars Programme, which was launched by the DSC to enhance the behavioural values of Dubai clubs’ staff, including athletes, coaches, administrators and drivers. “The aim is to ensure clubs in Dubai acquire a distinctive educational, sports and cultural status,” Al Tayer said.
