The UAE cricket team will take on Bangladesh in their opening match of the Asia Cup 2006, to be held in Pakistan.

According to information, the Asia Cup is scheduled to begin on February 14. Pakistan has been given the honour of hosting this biennial event by the Asian Cricket Council.

UAE is in Group A along with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Group B comprises India, Oman and Pakistan.

UAE qualified to play in this tournament by emerging as the champions of the ACC Trophy. This will be the second consecutive time that UAE will be playing in the Asia Cup.

Hosts Pakistan will meet Oman at Karachi on the opening day while Sri Lanka take on Bangladesh in Rawalpindi.

UAE play their first match on the second day of the tournament against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi.

On the very next day, at the same venue, UAE will meet the strong Sri Lankan team, while India will take on Pakistan in Karachi.

Sharjah hosted the first edition of this tournament in 1984. Subsequently, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and India staged this event.

The 2004 edition of this tournament was to be held in Pakistan, but was shifted to Sri Lanka.

The Asia Cup 2006 will be held soon after India's tour of Pakistan, scheduled to commence in January.
