Ravindra Jadeja makes history in England: Breaks Garry Sobers’ 59-year-old record

Ravindra Jadeja has carved his name into Test cricket history with a sensational batting performance in the 2025 India-England series, officially known as the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. On Saturday at The Oval, Jadeja scored his sixth 50-plus score of the series, creating multiple records in the process.

With this knock, Jadeja became the first-ever batter to score six 50+ scores in a single Test series in England while batting at No.6 or lower — breaking a long-standing record held by West Indies legend Sir Garfield Sobers, who had five such scores back in 1966.

This performance also made Jadeja the first Indian to hit six 50+ scores in a Test series in England, surpassing the previous best of five shared by Sunil Gavaskar (1979), Virat Kohli (2018), and Rishabh Pant (2025).

Jadeja now has 516 runs in the series, making him India’s third-highest run-getter in the series (behind Shubman Gill’s 754 and KL Rahul’s 532). The first Indian to score over 500 runs in a Test series while batting only at No.6 or lower. The only visiting batter with 10 half-centuries in England at No.6 or lower, going past Sobers’ 9.

In doing so, Jadeja has also climbed to third place on the all-time list for most runs at No.6 or lower in an away Test series, behind only Sobers (722) and Pakistan’s Wasim Raja (517).

Jadeja’s efforts have not only boosted India’s batting depth but have rewritten the narrative about lower-order contributions. This historic run reinforces why he is currently ranked the World No.1 all-rounder in Test cricket.
