Dubai: The Kerala Cricket League will commence on Thursday at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

Sixteen teams will compete in the first edition of the tournament.

At a function held at Hotel Versailles, Ali Anwar Jafri, the joint secretary of the Sharjah Cricket Council along with Mansour Pasha of the council distributed the team jerseys to the 16 owners of the different teams

Speaking at the function, Rajesh Pillai of Willows Cricket Club, who are the organisers of the event said: “We are delighted at the response to this tournament. We are focused on nurturing talented cricketers based in the region and to provide a platform for highlighting their skills.

“Mazhar Khan the administrator of Emirates Cricket Board and secretary of Sharjah Cricket Council and UAE team coach Aaqib Javed have said that they will closely monitor the performance of the players in this tournament.”

The opening ceremony will be held on Thursday at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium in traditional Kerala style.

During the function, the official website of the KCL (www.kclT20.com) was also launched.

Speaking after the function, Jafri said: “We are expecting an exciting tournament. We are expecting an intense competition especially with the kind of facilities the organisers have arranged for the event. Sharjah Council will provide all help to ensure the success of the event.”

The winners of the tournament will receive a gold trophy and cash prize of Dh60,000. The runners up will received a silver trophy and cash prize of Dh30,000.

“All matches will be held under floodlight from 6pm. Two matches will be held every day except on the opening day when the first match will commence at 8pm,” said Paul Ninan of Willows Club.
