Dubai: While the removal of India’s assistant coach Abhishek Nayar is yet to be officially confirmed by the Indian cricket board, defending Indian Premier League champions Kolkata Knight Riders have already welcomed him back into the fold.

Nayar, who was part of KKR’s backroom staff when they lifted their third IPL title last season, played a key role in player development through the franchise’s academy.

“Welcome back home, Abhishek Nayar,” the team posted on X, confirming his re-entry into the setup.

Nayar had earlier worked with KKR from IPL 2018, mentoring young Indian players at the team’s academy in Mumbai. He was part of the triumphant IPL 2024 squad before taking up the assistant coach role with the Indian national team, following Gautam Gambhir’s appointment as head coach in July last year.

Counter-productive in dressing room

According to a PTI report citing a senior support staff member, Nayar was sacked after internal feedback described his presence in the dressing room as “counter-productive”. His removal is expected to be the first of several changes after India’s recent struggles in Test cricket, including a 3-0 whitewash at home against New Zealand. The shake-up comes as India begin preparations for the next World Test Championship cycle.

The contracts of fielding coach T Dilip and strength and conditioning coach Soham Desai have also expired. Former Netherlands all-rounder Ryan ten Doeschate will continue in his role, while South African Adrian Le Roux — returning for a second stint — will replace Desai.

Meanwhile, Kolkata Knight Riders are having an inconsistent season with three wins and four losses. They are currently sixth on the table with six points and will next face leaders Gujarat Titans at home on Monday.
