Dubai: "Pune being included as one of the teams in the Indian Premier League is a big boost for the cricketers of this city and all those who play for Maharashtra," said Riaz Poonawala, who grew up in Pune and went on to represent Maharashtra for eight years.

"Pune players have always been overshadowed by Mumbai and with this city getting into IPL it will open up opportunities for the talented players.

"Due to lack of encouragement cricket grounds were slowly dwindling there.

"This will revive cricket and help Maharashtra team produce better results in domestic cricket," added Poonawala, who went on to represent UAE in international matches.

Opportunities

"IPL will provide good opportunities to many youngsters. During my playing days we only had Ranji Trophy and Duleep Trophy matches to display our skills."

"I enjoy the thrill of watching IPL and feel sad that I was not born in this era because the style of batting required is similar to mine," said Poonwala, who clinched a place in the Indian squad against Australia in 1986.

"IPL has brought money into the game. Today almost every parent wants their child to take up cricket.

"If a player can get to play in two IPL's he can earn a decent living for the rest of his life. IPL has transformed cricket into a career."
