Openers Rahul and Jaiswal added 91 before England bowlers struck twice in succession
Dubai: No Virat Kohli. No Rohit Sharma. No problem. The future of Indian cricket delivered. Captain Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal scored sparkling centuries to dominate England on the opening day of the first Test in the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy series at Headingley on Friday. India finished the day at 359/3.
The sun-drenched day at Leeds belonged to Shubman Gill, who marked his first overseas Test as captain with a sublime unbeaten 127, guiding India through early setbacks and into a position of strength. Keeping him company is his deputy, Rishabh Pant, who scored 65 not out in his inimitable style and shared an unfinished 138-run fourth-wicket partnership..
Earlier, Indian openers KL Rahul and Jaiswal made a mockery of England captain Ben Stokes’s decision to bowl first by adding 91 runs. The steady start was disrupted when Rahul (42) slashed a wide delivery from Brydon Carse to Joe Root at first slip. More disaster struck in six balls as wicketkeeper Jamie Smith caught debutant Sai Sudarshan for a duck off an inside edge from a Stokes delivery.
After lunch, Gill and Jaiswal steadied the ship, putting together a resilient partnership that thwarted England’s initial momentum. Jaiswal reached a dominant century — his fifth in Tests and third against England — with remarkable grit despite battling hand cramps. His aggressive 101 came off 144 balls with 16 fours and a six.
Gill went on to finish the day unbeaten on 127, and his partnership with Pant powered India to 359 for three by stumps, firmly placing them in the driver’s seat.
Brief scores:
India: 359/3 (Shubman Gill 127 not out, Yashasvi Jaiswal 101, Rishabh Pant 65 not out, KL Rahul 42) vs England (Ben Stokes 2-43)
