Dubai: India captain Shubman Gill has been ruled out of the ongoing first Test against South Africa at Eden Gardens after suffering a neck spasm on Day 2.

The 26-year-old retired hurt on four in the first innings and did not return to the field. On Sunday morning, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Gill was taken to hospital for scans and further checks after play on Saturday. He remains under observation and will not take any further part in the match.

“Captain Shubman Gill had a neck injury on Day 2 of the ongoing Test against South Africa in Kolkata. He was taken to the hospital for examination after the end of the day’s play. He is currently under observation in the hospital. He will take no further part in the Test match. He will continue to be monitored by the BCCI medical team,” the board said.

Gill’s availability for the second Test in Guwahati, starting 22 November, is now uncertain. India are expected to assess his recovery over the next few days before taking a call on his fitness.
