Dubai: Once the cornerstone of India’s batting line-up, Rohit Sharma now finds himself on the sidelines, watching his team battle Australia in the fifth Test. In a series marked by personal milestones and professional struggles, the skipper’s journey has been a dramatic tale of euphoria, decline, and self-sacrifice.

A delayed start, a rocky road

Rohit Sharma missed the team’s flight to Australia in November due to the birth of his second child. By the time he joined the squad, India were on the verge of winning the first Test, and expectations soared that his presence would bolster the team’s prospects in the five-match series.

However, the initial excitement faded quickly. Within weeks, the ground beneath Sharma’s feet shifted so dramatically that the once-reliable opener found himself benched for the team’s final Test.

Voluntary sacrifice for the team

On Friday, Sharma voluntarily stepped aside for the fifth Test in Sydney, allowing young talent Shubman Gill to take his place. Reports of the decision surfaced on Thursday, highlighting Sharma’s series-high score of just 10 runs as a factor. The skipper was seen sitting in the dressing room, his expression reflecting the emotional weight of the moment.

“Our captain has shown his leadership; he’s opted to rest in this game,” said stand-in skipper Jasprit Bumrah, who had earlier captained the side in Perth. “That shows there’s a lot of unity in our team. There’s no selfishness — whatever is in the team’s best interest, we are looking to do that.”

Form slump signals change

Rohit’s form has been a concern for some time. In his last 15 Test innings, he has managed just one half-century — a stark decline for a player of his calibre. The struggles continued earlier in the season when India suffered a 3-0 series loss to New Zealand at home.

These performances have come at a critical juncture for Indian cricket, with the team’s prospects of qualifying for the World Test Championship final appearing slim.

Is this the end of the road?

Former India coach Ravi Shastri suggested that this might be the end of Rohit Sharma’s 67-Test career.

“It’s still a brave call for a captain to own up and say, ‘I’m prepared to take the bench in this game,’” Shastri said during commentary on Fox Sports. “If there was a home season coming up, he might’ve thought of carrying on, but I think he might just pull the plug at the end of this Test.

“It’s not that India lack youngsters. There are very, very good players waiting, and it’s time to build. Tough decisions, but there is a time for everything.”

A transition in Indian cricket

Should Rohit Sharma announce his retirement, it would mark the second high-profile departure on this tour, following Ravichandran Ashwin’s exit after the third Test at the Gabba. Sharma’s decision would also come in the wake of his own, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja stepping away from T20 cricket after India’s 2024 World Cup triumph.

With a wealth of young talent waiting for their chance, Indian cricket appears poised for a generational shift. Sharma’s ‘selfless’ decision underscores his commitment to the team, but also signals the beginning of a new era.
