Dubai: George Dockrell is the most promising player in the International Cricket Council (ICC) Combined Associate and Affiliate XI.

Nineteen-year-old Dockrell from Ireland has already impressed Test playing nations with his slow left-arm spin and played an important role in his country's impressive show in recent years including in the World Cup.

Speaking to Gulf News, Dockrell said: "My World Cup experience was special and brilliant. As a cricketer you always want to play in a World Cup as it is the pinnacle of cricket. The event being played in the sub continent made it special. So it was a great experience bowling against great teams and also against India in India in a World Cup."

Dockrell bowled brilliantly in Ireland's World Cup win over England in Bangalore. He even took the wicket of England skipper Andrew Strauss in the match.

"It was a great game and big win against England. I feel so nice to be part of that history of Irish cricket and it will be remembered as the greatest game that Ireland had played," added Dockrell, who took up cricket due to his father.

"My Dad played cricket all his life and is still playing cricket. So I used to go with him and play for his club in Dublin."

When asked how did he choose to be a spinner despite being tall "Once while playing in a car park with a tennis ball, I bowled spin. My coach who watched it said I should try bowling spin as he felt I was bowling well and that is how it all began," said Dockrell, who has bagged 32 wickets in One Day International matches already.

Dockrell idolises New Zealand's Daniel Vettori. "He is my idol because he too played when he was very young and has been playing for years and performing consistently," said Dockrell, who feels he has still a lot to learn as a bowler.

"There is huge amount of improvement to be made in my bowling technical and tactically. I am learning something new every hour," he concluded.
