Dubai: Ashish Bhandari has achieved the honour of becoming the first batsman to hit a century in the Sindhi Premier League.

Opening the batting for NHormus Divine Sindhis, Bhandari cracked an unbeaten 120 to steer his team to a 20-run win over Neel Mighty Sindhis in a high-scoring match at the Sevens Stadium near Dubai.

Speaking to Gulf News after achieving the feat in the 25-overs-per-side competition, Bhandari, whose unbeaten 120 came off 52 balls with five sixes and 14 hits to the boundary, said: “It’s a great feeling to become the first century-maker of the tournament because it is not easy to get a century on a turf wicket. Eighty per cent of the time I play on cement tracks.

“I reached my century in the 23rd over and managed another 20 runs while going for my shots.”

Shiva Pagarani, one of the main organisers of the tournament, said: “Bhandari’s achievement is special because, in the first edition of the Sindhi Premier League we did not have anyone scoring a century. It is nice to have one in the second edition.”

Bhandari’s ton helped Divine Sindhis post 216 for 6 in 25 overs, with Jay Joshi playing second fiddle with 36 from 30 balls.

Despite the huge target, Mighty Sindhis chased brilliantly with an unbeaten 62 from Ronit Phulwani and 31 apiece from Gaurav Raj Kumar and Neeraj Sajani.

Bhandari also sparkled with the ball to bag three wickets for 41 runs to help restrict Mighty Sindhis to 197 in their 25 overs.

In another match, United Sindhis beat Petrochem Sindhi Kings by six wickets, with Jitendra Singh on form with bat and ball. He hit 50 runs and bagged two wickets to ensure an easy win in 22.4 overs.
