Kuala Lumpur: A host of stars from the sporting and entertainment worlds are in Kuala Lumpur for the 2014 Laureus World Sports Awards, including Dutch football legend Johan Cruyff and New Zealand rugby great Dan Carter.
Legendary Olympians such as Sebastian Coe, Michael Johnson and Mark Spitz; football giants Bobby Charlton, Marcel Desailly and Ruud Gullit; ‘Marvellous’ Marvin Hagler, the undisputed world middleweight boxing champion between 1980 and 1987; former New Zealand rugby captain Sean Fitzpatrick; and skateboard hero Tony Hawk will also be attending the prestigious event on Wednesday.
Two of Malaysia’s greatest sports stars, seven-time world squash champion Nicol David and badminton world No.1 Lee Chong Wei, are other luminaries on the guest list.
German actor Daniel Bruhl, who could easily be mistaken for a sportsman following his brilliant portrayal of former Fomula One driver Niki Lauda in the 2013 film Rush, is the latest entertainment star to confirm attendance, along with Chinese supermodel and actress Du Juan.
British actor Benedict Cumberbatch, best known for playing the detective Sherlock Holmes in the popular television series, will host the awards ceremony, while actor and singer-songwriter Jamie Foxx, an Oscar and Grammy winner, will be performing during the event.
