Hosts The Modern High School Dubai and Our Own English High School Dubai started their campaigns on a winning note in the boys' section on the opening day of the 10th Modern Trophy inter-school basketball tournament which got underway yesterday.

The tournament was inaugurated by Dino Varkey, director of operations at GEMS and IHMS.

Jassim Mehmood and Abhinav Ramesh were in their elements as the secured 15 and 10 points respectively to lead TMHS to an entertaining 45-33 win against Varkey International Private School (VIPS).

Ryan C. Rocque was the lone fighter for the VIPS side with a personal tally of 19 points. In the second match, Our Own defeated New Filipino School, Sharjah 38-16 after leading 26-0 at the end of the opening two quarters.

Mehmood Galadari of Our Own was on song during the earlier stages of the match with some quick breaks to keep the scoreboard moving. But the third quarter saw the Filipino boys fight back into the match with Galvez Bryan Joy pushing in his nine points, including a looping three-pointer.

Rohail D'Souza topscored with 12 points, while Danish Siddiqui added 10 points for Our Own. In a girls match, The Indian High School, Dubai got past The Millennium School 28-6 with Henna Mohnani and Shweta Pillay contributing six points apiece, while Anushka Menezes pushed in all six points for Millennium.
