Toronto: Yangervis Solarte led off the bottom of the eighth inning by hitting the tiebreaking home run as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the New York Yankees 5-3 on Saturday afternoon at Rogers Centre in Toronto.

Solarte snapped a 3-3 deadlock when he drove a 2-0 97-mph fastball well over the centre field fence off Dellin Betances (0-1), who also allowed a home run to Kevin Pillar on Thursday.

Solarte’s first home run for the Blue Jays travelled an estimated 455 feet with an exit velocity of 110.5 mph.

Justin Smoak had three hits, including an RBI single and run-scoring double off CC Sabathia. Luke Maile added an RBI single as the Blue Jays avoided their first 0-3 start since the 2004 season.

Adam Eaton went 5-for-5 with a homer plus four runs scored with three RBIs, and Brian Goodwin hit a grand slam as visiting Washington defeated Cincinnati 13-7.

Matt Adams and Trea Turner also homered for Washington. Adams’ homer gave Washington a lead it never lost, and Eaton banged out two doubles, two singles plus a solo homer during the first five-hit game of his career. The Goodwin grand slam came in the ninth off of Kevin Quackenbush.

Washington starter Stephen Strasburg (1-0) went 6 1/3 innings and allowed three runs on eight hits.

Todd Frazier collected three RBIs and gave New York a lead it would never relinquish with a two-run double in the first inning as the Mets cruised past visiting St. Louis 6-2 at Citi Field.

Yonder Alonso stunned his former teammates with a first-inning grand slam, giving Cleveland the early big lead on the road with a 6-5 win against Seattle.

Andrew Miller pitched out of jams in the seventh and eighth innings, preserving a one-run lead, and closer Cody Allen worked a perfect ninth inning for his first save, getting the Indians even with the Mariners after a 2-1 loss on Opening Day.

Alonso, who signed with Cleveland as a free agent in the off-season after finishing 2017 with the Mariners, came through with his first home run as an Indian and the third Grand Slam of his career following a double by Jason Kipnis and two-out walks to Edwin Encarnacion and Rajai Davis.
