Dubai: Major General Mohammad Hilal Al Qa'abi, chairman of the UAE athletics federation, lauded the team of UAE girls who would participate in the Arab youth athletics championships, to be held in Cairo from November 1-4.

"The participation of the UAE girls in the Arab championships is in accordance to our programme in the federation's election held last June. The most important objective was to support the females and encourage them to take part in the federation activities," said Al Qa'abi.

Good performance

He said the girls showed a good performance in the tournament held in Ramadan, from where the team for Cairo was selected.

"The support of General Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, for the athletics federation and to the women athletics committee in particular, was behind the development of the women's participation in the international events."

The UAE youth athletics team left yesterday for Egypt.

Following is the UAE youth team (Girls): Laila Ali Jafar (Dubai), Maryam Salim Meftah (Umm Al Quwain), Amira Abdul Hamid, Dalal Suliman, Shaikha Abdullah (Sharjah).

Boys team: Juma Bilal and Mohammad Omar Khatib.
