Seoul: The air quality of Pyeongchang and its neighbouring areas will be under special watches until after the Winter Olympics are over, a national environment research organ said on Monday.
The Winter Olympics and Paralympics will be held from February 9-25 and March 9-18 respectively, in Pyeongchang and Gangneung.
The National Institute of Environmental Research said the special watches are effective from Monday until March 30, during which time fine dust is likely to arrive from China.
Vehicles measuring fine dust pollution levels will be stationed on alpine ski slopes in Jeongseon County and at a thermoelectric power plant in Gangneung, the institute said, adding that measured values will be made public in real time.
High-definition weather forecasts for the games’ venues will also be provided, and satellite images will used to crack down on possible sources of air pollution emissions, according to the institute.
