In pictures: Ups and downs at Epsom

Race 1, Investec Woodcote EBF Stakes (6f) - Great start for Dubai connections as the Owen Burrows-trained Twaasol wins the opener in the famous yellow colours of owner Maj. Gen. Sheikh Ahmed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Chief of Dubai Police and Public Security, the owner of Jebel Ali Racecourse in Dubai. The joint favourite stayed on comfortably to win under globetrotting jockey Martin Harley.

Race 2, Investec Surrey Stakes (Listed, 7f) The favourite Safe Voyage wins the Surrey Stakes in track record time to gift trainer John Quinn with a memorable 1,000th winner. Former champion jockey Silvestre De Sousa chose to make all at a fast pace and the winner proved a willing partner.

Race 3. Investec Handicap (1m 2f) - Sky Defender became the first long-odds winner on Derby Day with Joe riding a confident race aboard the 22/1 chance. Breath Caught ran on gamely for Harry Bentley to finish second.

Race 4. Investec Oaks (Group 1, 1m 4f) - Irish-trained Love turned the Oaks into a procession to complete the 1,000 Guineas — Epsom Oaks double. With Ryan Moore in the saddle the hot favourite pulled clear approaching the final furlong to leave Frankly Darling a far-away second, and the rest of the field truly well-beaten. It was a fourth success in the past six years for trainer Aidan O’Brien. Love clocked 2.34.06 secs to eclipse the great Enable’s winning time in the race.

Race 5. Princess Elizabeth Stakes (Group 3, 1m) - Godolphin filly Summer Romance made all the running to win the Group 3 Princess Elizabeth Stakes, a race filled with high-class fillies. The winner was ridden by William Buick for trainer Charlie Appleby. Guineas runner-up Cloak Of Spirits, ridden by Andrea Atzeni for Derby-winning owner Shaikh Mohammad Obaid Al Maktoum, finished a game second.

Race 6. Investec Derby (Group 1, 1m 4f) - In one of the most unusual races every run at Epsom, outsiders totally dominated the Derby to finish in front of fancied contenders, Kameko and English King. The race was won by 25/1 Serpentine, an intended pacemaker for the six-strong Irish raiding party of Aidan O’Brien, with Dubai-owned Khalifa Sat running a blinder at odds of 50/1 to finish a highly-creditably second. Khalifa Sat ran in the colours of Dubai businessman and veteran horseman, Ahmed Al Shaikh, who has been present at Epsom Racecourse in the UK to watch almost every Derby since Nashwan won in 1989.

Race 7. Investec Zebra Handicap (7f) - Order was restored in the final race of the day when favourite Muntadab won the seven furlong handicap from 16/1 shot Count Otto and 28/1 Alemaratalyoum.
