VACCINE UNDER DEVELOPMENT: Work is underway with biotech company Moderna to develop the COVID-19 vaccine, according to Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. The announcement was made during a press briefing at the Department of Health and Human Services on February 7, Friday.

Dr Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the US National Institutes of Health, has led the fight against every infectious disease crisis in America since 1984. He was one of the first scientists to recognise that the world was on the verge of a new epidemic, HIV/AIDS, and then devoted his career to finding a cure for it.

Dr Anthony S. Fauci (born on December 24, 1940), has made influential contributions to the understanding of how HIV destroys the body's defenses leading to the progression to AIDS. He has also played a significant role in the early 2000s in creating the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief and in driving development of biodefense drugs and vaccines following the 9/11 terrorist attacks. He has developed therapies for formerly fatal diseases such as polyarteritis nodosa, granulomatosis with polyangiitis, and lymphomatoid granulomatosis.

RESEARCH WORK: Dr Anthony Fauci, director of the US National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) said one of the first steps that the vaccine development had to go through proved "successful" after the researchers successfully inserted the virus gene, published by their Chinese counterparts in a database, into the Moderna's messenger RNA platform, allowing it to express proteins.

INDUCING IMMUNOGENICITY: One key step in developing the coronavirus vaccine is to insert a virus gene using which allows it to express proteins. Then, using Moderna's messenger RNA platform, those proteins will be put into a mouse model to induce "immunogenicity", Dr Fauci explained.

INITIAL TRIALS: If successful, initial clinical trials will start within the next 10 weeks (or 2-1/2 months) to test the vaccine's safety in a small group of humans, according to Dr Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the US National Institutes of Health.
