The July 2025 Buck Moon lit up UAE skies and beyond, dazzling stargazers worldwide
Dubai: The July 2025 supermoon, known as the Buck Moon, illuminated skies over the UAE and beyond, captivating stargazers across the globe. Appearing larger and brighter than a typical full moon due to its close approach to Earth, this breathtaking celestial event was a true spectacle.
The name "Buck Moon" comes from Native American tradition, marking the time when male deer (bucks) begin regrowing their antlers.
It’s also called the “Thunder Moon” for July’s summer storms and the “Hay Moon” in Europe, reflecting the hay-harvest season.
Astronomically, this Buck Moon was special—being the farthest full moon from the sun in 2025 and the first full moon of the astronomical summer.
Rising low along the southern horizon just after the summer solstice, it was one of the year’s lowest-hanging full moons.
A full moon occurs when the moon sits opposite the sun, fully illuminating its face as seen from Earth—creating a brilliant, glowing orb that draws skywatchers worldwide.
This Buck Supermoon showcased the beauty of orbital mechanics and reminded us of the deep ties between the heavens and Earth’s seasonal rhythms.
This full moon will appear in the constellation Sagittarius, one of the best-known summer constellations in the Northern Hemisphere. Though it lacks bright stars, it remains a favourite among amateur stargazers.
Only June’s Strawberry Moon ranks lower on the horizon — enhancing both the apparent size and warm colour of the Buck Moon to the human eye.
