Top 7 social media trends of this week

What lit social media on fire this week?

Last updated:

1. 10-year visa rules

On Sunday, the UAE Cabinet announced a 10-year residence visa for certain categories of applicants and 100 per cent ownership of companies by international investors. The announcement became one of the top trends in the UAE this week.

@HHShkMohd: At today’s Cabinet meeting, we decided to allow 100% foreign ownership of companies in UAE, with a 10-year visa for investors, scientists, doctors, engineers, entrepreneurs and innovators. The UAE has always welcomed, and always will, innovators and business leaders.

2. Yanny or Laurel?

This is ‘The Dress’ debate of 2018! An audio clip went viral on social media as people heard two very different words when it was played – some heard Laurel and others, Yanny.

Ah360: So, do you hear laurel or yanny? Apparently it depends on the device you are using and the frequency you use to hear ... IDK!!

3. The royal wedding

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding became one of the most commented topics on social media this week as the American actress’s fairytale wedding to a British prince caught people’s imaginations.

@tomandlorenzo: They look so happy! #royalwedding

4. Who’s Melanie?

In a welcome-home tweet, US President Donald Trump misspelled his wife’s name and #Melanie became a worldwide trend.

@TrivWorks: “Melania’s cat Melanie is also home from the hospital and that’s who he was referring to...”

5. Nipah virus

An outbreak of a highly contagious virus led to at least 11 deaths in the Indian state of Kerala, creating panic.

@kamaljii: Alert in Tamil Nadu/Kerala. In just two days, 10 have died in Kerala due to #NipahVIRUS. 23 (Kozhikode) and three (Malapuram) admitted in hospital in the last two days. No permanent treatment for this. In case of fever or headache, please go to the hospital immediately. Keep pigs, bats & pets away.

6. Nurse Lini:

A heartbreaking story of a nurse who died treating patients of Nipah virus also went viral, especially the note she left for her husband.

@inquestioner: Nurse Lini died in our battle against the Nipah virus. She died trying to save patients infected by it. She was just 31 & was a mother of two little kids. If she is not a martyr, I don’t know who is.

7. Karnataka elections

State elections in India continued to dominate the trends as the Bharatiya Janata Party’s failed attempt to form a government highlighted the level of political corruption.

@Narenpurohit: BSY’s son B.Y. Vijayendra negotiating with Congress MLA’s daughter. Crores of money, ministerial position ... Need any more proof of Modi & Shah’s ‘corruption-free India’?
