Social media users share pictures of Mecca
Monday morning saw beautiful pictures from Mecca, trending on Twitter. The hashtag #MeccaLive has been trending on for a few days as tweeps in the region asked Snapchat to feature Mecca on its app on Monday. Snapchat, a video sharing chat application recently started a ‘live’ feauture, allowing users to contribute pictures and videos to a live stream, broadcasted worldwide.
Saudis asked Snapchat to host this live coverage on the 27th day of Ramadan (13 July this year) as it is believed to be one of the more blessed nights of the month.
Muslims consider Mecca the holiest place on earth. It is revered as a place where Prophet Muhammad was born and where he had his ‘first revelation’ of the Quran. Every year Muslims from all around the world flock the Saudi city to perform the Hajj pilgrimage.
