Observing World Mental Health Day

According to the World Health Organisation, ‘if we don’t act urgently, by 2030 depression will be the leading illness globally.’

It’s a day first celebrated in 1992 at the initiative of the World Federation for Mental Health, a global mental health organization.

The World Health Organisation recognises World Mental Health Day on 10 October every year. Each year has a different theme, this year’s aim is to provide psychological first aid and support to those in distress.

#WorldMentalHealthDay - Many social media users shared messages asking those in depression, to talk about their problems and share.

Oncquest Laboratories Ltd.: “Talk about it. #WorldMentalHealthDay

Chughtai Lab: “This #WorldMentalHealthDay talk about Mental Health and raise awareness. #EndTheStigma #October10 #CLcares”

#LightUpPurple - The global Light Up Purple drive was set up in memory of Canadian teenager Amanda Todd, who killed herself in 2012. The 15-year-old had brought the problem of cyber bullying to mainstream attention after she posted a video on YouTube in which she told her story with handwritten signs.

Amanda Todd Legacy - Staying Strong: “Another year has passed...and we still think of you every day Amanda. Your light shines so that other’s can find their way. On October 10th, #lightuppurple, light a purple candle, wear purple...and most importantly...keep talking about Amanda’s Legacy. Say no to bullying, take care of your mental health, and always be kind.”

Sarah Dosher Author: “#lightuppurple - I’m positive we all know someone or are personally touched by mental illness. Show your support today.”
