Vikash Kothari, a reader, asks: I sometimes continue to sneeze for a while. This problem starts all of a sudden and stays for a day.I am not sure if it is due to allergy.

As soon as I go out from an air-conditioned room or when I come into an A/C room, I start to sneeze and I get running nose. I feel helpless as it happens all of sudden, I want to know what induces this.

Dr Rosamma Sabu, licenced homeopathic practitioner, Al Balsam Homeopathic Centre, Sharjah, replies: Regarding your question, the symptoms described can either be due to allergic rhinitis where there will always be a specific allergen or due to non-allergic rhinitis.

Non-allergic  rhinitis is a medical term that describes a set of symptoms that resemble an allergy, but that occur without a known cause. It produces symptoms such as:

  • Post-nasal drip
  • Running nose
  • Sneezing
  • Stuffy nose

Usually, it develops in adulthood, and symptoms last year-round. Unlike allergic rhinitis, non-allergic rhinitis does not involve the immune system. Non-allergic rhinitis can cause just as much misery as allergic rhinitis. Both types of rhinitis are associated with:

  • Decreased production at work
  • Increased doctor visits
  • The two are so similar, it's often necessary to perform allergy tests and blood tests to tell them apart

Often, what causes non-allergic rhinitis is unknown. 'Environmental' irritants are common triggers of non-allergic rhinitis. To treat this symptoms and restoration to health is possible by simple homeopathic medicines in a very short period.
