Dubai: A driver has been accused of groping a waitress while walking in the street, a court heard on Monday.

The 25-year-old Filipina waitress was walking with her friend to a supermarket at 1am in Al Quoz Industrial Area in August.

A group of Indian men walked in the opposite direction on the pavement, according to records.

When the two women walked in between the men, one of them, a 30-year-old driver, molested the waitress.

The waitress scolded the man and yelled at him before he cursed her and walked away with his friends.

The Filipinas followed the men and called out to pedestrians to help her catch the assaulter until an African bystander restrained the man.

After reporting the matter to the police, the Indian was apprehended.

Prosecutors charged the suspect of groping the Filipina.

The suspect refuted the charge and pleaded not guilty before the Dubai Court of First Instance on Monday.

“I didn’t touch her,” he told presiding judge Habib Awad.

The Filipina told the court: “Five or six Indian men [including the suspect] were walking in the direction opposite to us. When we walked between the men, the suspect groped my top. He grabbed me strongly and caused me pain. When I scolded him, he cursed me. An African eyewitness helped me stop the suspect from walking away and the police came and arrested him,” she claimed to prosecutors.

A ruling will be heard on October 15.
