Dubai: An Egyptian man, whose wife and two daughters were killed in their apartment in Cairo during the World Cup match between Egypt and Russia, confessed to murdering his family.
Salah Abu Al Abbas became a suspect after police picked up on conflicting statements during their investigation, the Egyptian news daily Youm7, reported.
Abu Al Abbas, who owns a car showroom, said he lost all his money in the stock market and he feared that his family would become impoverished.
In earlier investigations, Abu Al Abbas claimed that 300,000 Egyptian pounds ($17,000), that he inherited from his father’s apartment, went missing on the day of the murder.
However, he failed to provide any evidence to support his claim.
During the investigation, police found scars and wounds on the suspect’s hand, although Abu Al Abbas claimed the scars were from playing with his daughter a few days before the crime.
To verify his statement, police ordered a forensics report to confirm the timing of the wounds.
In later confessions, Abu Al Abbas changed his story completely.
He said that medication he had been taking for the past six years had rendered him infertile.
This resulted in Abu Al Abbas doubting his wife’s loyalty and it caused several problems between them.
The mother, 38, was choked to death with her headscarf.
The 14-year-old daughter was strangled using a telephone cord while her 12-year-old sister was killed by suffocating her with a pillow case.
Abu Al Abbas who remains in police custody did not attend his family’s funeral.
