Dubai: It’s almost time to go to the polls in Pakistan, but it seems like some citizens will not be in the country to vote, and this has social media users in the country riled up.

Many celebrities from the Pakistan television, fashion and music industries are headed to Toronto, Canada, for the 6th Hum Awards, which are scheduled to be held on July 28. The Facebook page of the award show shared pictures and videos of celebrities who are either on their way, or have already reached Canada and are rehearsing for their upcoming performances.

But, what started a conversation on Twitter was a tweet by a celebrity himself.

Farhan Saeed, a Pakistani singer, songwriter and actor, has called out his peers for travelling just before the elections and thus not exercising their voting rights.

On his official twitter account, @farhan_saeed, he posted: “All the people from my fraternity and otherwise travelling abroad at such a crucial time is so heart-breaking. Please let’s not take our country’s future for granted. #Elections2018 #PakistanElections”

His thoughts have been retweeted more than 1,100 times and the tweet has been liked by around 5,000 tweeps. The viral tweet is being shared by many who are agreeing with Saeed’s sentiments and urging people to vote on July 25.

Tweep @Nas_k27 wrote: “What a shame!! So many overseas Pakistanis are travelling back to Pakistan just to vote. And these people are going out of Pakistan?? Just for the ceremony? Shameful.”

@bushrareal202 tweeted: “Event is on 28th. And rehearsals can be done in Pakistan, too. They should go there after casting vote as a mature and responsible citizen.”

Tweep @AsmaHanifyy added: “You’re absolutely right. Half of our industry stars move to Canada for Hum Awards show because award show is more important. @KubraMKhan @realhaniahehe @TheMahiraKhan #YasirHussain #ShazKhan and many more... Sirf tabdeli ka tweet karne se tabdeli nahi aye gi (Just tweeting about change will not bring change). Shame @Humtvnetwork.”

Tweep @SamiaMPardhan wrote: “I’m so glad that someone said this out loud. I wish everyone would understand how crucial it is to get out and vote. For our own present and future.”

@omeralvii added: “If you aren’t casting a vote then you don’t have the right to complain about the system of Pakistan. You aren’t doing your duty how can you hold someone else accountable for not doing their duty? Please stop being a hypocrite, go out and vote for the one you think is best for Pakistan.”
