Ras Al Khor is a creative district with design potential. Don’t believe us? Take it from four of the UAE’s leading design minds — product designer Khalid Shafar, fashion designer Khulood Thani, jewellery designer Nadine Kanso and architect Tarik Al Zaharna — who are behind Design Ras Al Khor, a design event that they have announced will take place for the second time this October.
Not to be confused with the other “RAK” (Ras Al Khaimah), DRAK, or Design Ras Al Khor, takes place on the sidelines of Dubai Design Week, a massive, city-wide event, from October 24-29.
This year’s theme is ‘Celebrating Wood’, with four designers Tulip Hazbar, Hind Bin Demaithan, Hala Kaiksow and Lina Younes — displaying their projects on the theme.
Other things to look out for include the International Projects Selection (Aleni seat by David Trubridge and Surfaces Sonores by Pierre Charrie are two of the pieces on display), Ghaf Kitchen’s pop-up culinary experiences, which are dinners for 24 guests (44 on Friday and Saturday) for Dh400 per person, and a panel discussion by international speakers and designers (October 27 at Intersect by Lexus in DIFC).
“We are dedicated to transforming this part of Dubai into a creative district that will inspire and nurture future generations of creative talent,” said
Sharfar. “We appreciate that this is a slow process, but together with our Official Partners, we are adamant that we are already on the right track. We are working with four very interesting designers this year and are planning a series of interesting talks and events to support the DRAK initiative.”
