Dubai interior designer Pratyush Sarup lets us in on the world of interior design through this fortnightly feature

What can be a better way to infuse new energy in our lives than a little makeover of your home interiors. From minor changes to big ticket items, there is something for everyone who wants to give their home a stylish edge. Adopt these ideas to make minor tweaks to your interiors and be on-trend:
DIAL DOWN THE NOISE
Rid yourself of jewel toned walls and invest in wallpaper or paint, with colours veering towards airy, wispy tones as we celebrate browns, ivories, greens and blues in a lighter reincarnation. Another big colour trend this year is grey. While we reserved high-octave colours for accent walls in the past, move forward with a feature wall in dark grey or stark white for dialed down glam. Varied design styles, textures and finishes will bring the look alive, so layer on.
REFINED RUSTIC
Raw materials such as linen, cotton and wood are key for the refined rustic look. With its muted palette of crisp white and putty shades paired with accents of smoke blue and blackboard, refined rustic can be mixed and matched to create a relaxed and simple look.
BOHO CHIC
Taking inspiration from Moorish and Moroccan interiors, this collection encapsulates a relaxed Bohemian retreat with its embellished textiles, detailed home accessories and chunky white china finish with a subtle tribal print.
BOTANICAL GARDENS
Fresh and feminine, the new Botanical Gardens trend breathes new life into the home, taking inspiration from blooms, butterflies and bird studies. Tranquil shades of apple, fern and teal with purple accents paired with dark wood create an organic look for the home.
THE BIG TICKET
These changes may involve structural contractors and consultants, but not only will they appreciate your house’s value, they will improve your quality of life in 2014.
OPEN UP YOUR KITCHEN
Creating an open kitchen in the house might require demolition work and a new glass partition but the results are worth it. Not only will your kitchen look bigger but also better with more sunlight. Ensure a connect between the indoors and nature with a solid wooden floor.
GREEN IS GOOD
“Going Green” is a lifestyle choice. It extends to your living spaces beyond the LED lighting the eco-conscious have already invested in. This year aggregated corkboard panels have made a big comeback, going well beyond their original sound absorption use and being celebrated as a final finish on surfaces or the build material for furniture. Use of salvaged wood also makes a huge impact when used as a kitchen counter top.
INDUSTRIAL LUXE
Rid yourself of ceramic stiles and stones, that show age through grouts and invest in seamless or wooden flooring that creaks. Cement floors that will last through rough use, changing trends and be adaptable to your changing interior whims are the way forward. Add pigments to your liking, imprint designs or use white cement for a surreal effect.
