The future's so bright, you really are going to have to wear shades

Hollywood can never hold off when it comes to trying out a new-season trend - and literally days after it was seen on the S/S12 runways, neon had become a highlight on the red carpets of Tinseltown.
Having ditched its scary 80s past, where fluorescents were more a terrifying assault on the eyeballs than a serious style statement, after making a succession of appearances on the catwalks in recent years, neon is emerging as a new summer-wardrobe must - and is actually rather wearable. In a rainbow of highlighter-pen colours from pink, orange, green, yellow and blue to beacon red, the runways were awash with eye-popping outfits, from Nanette Lepore and Peter Som to Rodarte and - Michelle Obama's fave - Jason Wu. Not just for the thrill seeker, everything from ballgowns to boxy denim jackets work in neon, with feminine pieces in standout shades making for the freshest of new-season looks.
