Classic 50s glamour never goes out of style. But thanks to Miuccia Prada, this season's obsession with vintage Americana has taken prom queen dreams to a whole new level.

In a collection that left fashion editors clamouring for every piece that scorched down the runway (the smoking, hot-rod heels in particular), Miuccia's modern and quirky take on mid-century glamour is arguably the most celebrated of the season.

With everyone from Dolce & Gabbana, Marc Jacobs, Jonathan Saunders, Rochas and Nina Ricci inspired by one of the most defining decades in fashion, prom queen polish and Mad Men-perfect housewives ruled the runways. Think dressing for diner - an American diner, of course - and let your inner Pink Lady shine through.

How to wear vintage Americana

 - Milkshake shades, tablecloth ginghams, glossy leathers and cartoon classic car prints are key to this season’s homage to all things American retro fabulous.

 - High-waisted pencil skirts or full dirndls are the skirt silhouettes of the season. Wear with a bustier or crop top (flashing just a few centimetres of the ribcage, often the slimmest part of the tummy area) topped off with a sweet cardi and killer heels – Prada’s flame-thrower stillies are our fave.

 - Wear boxy jackets and cute cardis thrown over your shoulders like a cape for extra 50s flair.

 - Keep hair long and loose or short and modern to avoid looking too retro.

 - Cat-eye shades work best for keeping the look focused. Look out for candy coloured frames, or pointed shapes in classic tones.
