Modern twist to the abaya
The opening night of Shayla and Abaya Fashion also featured a collection by designer Sara Quamber.
The young Bahraini launched her label Saryous Fashion after moving to Dubai three years ago. Sara has no formal training in fashion design but her impressive collection was proof of her talent and creativity.
She had experimented with a variety of silhouettes ranging from the traditional Bahraini cut with tapering sleeves, flowing Egyptian and Iranian cuts to trendy kaftans, kimono shapes and sleek gowns with salsa sleeves.
The embellishments included colourful traditional embroidery, Swarovski crystals, lace and animal print inserts and antique coins. Lace pants with multicoloured crystal trims worn under the abayas was an interesting modern twist to a traditional dress.
The designer was happy with the response to her first ever ramp show and excited that some European tourists also wanted to buy her creations.
"I am grateful to DSS for giving me this wonderful opportunity. I enjoy designing abayas and shaylas because it is our traditional dress and my dream is to take the shayla and abaya to international markets," said Sara.
"But in future I would also like to try my hand at designing other types of garments," she added.
