On May 3, the Dubai Chapter of Association of Kerala Medical Graduates (AKMG) and the Cardiology Society of India — Emirates Chapter held Save-a-Heart Day to create awareness on heart-related diseases.

The event was held at the India Trade and Exhibition Centre (ITEC), near Sharjah Expo, in the Al Tawuun Area.

It included a free heart-screening camp, a walkathon, a painting and poster-designing competition and a panel discussion, where patients were able to interact with cardiologists.

My family and I reached the venue at 7am, where we registered and headed for the walkathon.

It was very systematically organised and throughout the walk, various experts, cardiologists and organisers provided participants with crucial tips on how to have a healthy heart.

We were given tips like walk more, avoid stress, do regular exercise, say no to alcohol, watch your blood pressure, body mass index (BMI) and bad cholesterol and good cholesterol numbers.

I found this walk to be very informative and very different from other social or charity walks and many people came to join this cause.

The painting and poster-designing competition for children from different schools in the UAE was held next.

The aim of the competition was to teach children the value of developing good-living habits early in life, so they persist throughout adulthood.

I was glad to participate in this competition and overall it was a Friday well spent for a noble cause and with good people.
