The UAE's go-green drive to protect our environment is highly commendable. However, a little bit of extra effort by the authorities to educate the masses about ‘recyclable' and ‘non-recyclable' disposables will ensure wider realisation of the mission.

In many areas the ‘recyclable' and ‘non-recyclable' bins neither carry the pictures nor any information about the ‘Green' classification of common throwaway items; thus flummoxing us about which bin is to be used for each kind of litter.

I ran a survey across the strata of our communities to check their ‘Green' knowledge about the "recyclable/non-recyclable" items, and I found that their knowledge, including my own, was very much in the red! Some people said that they even try to avoid those earmarked bins, fearing it would invite fines if they fail to use the right one!

I think the manufacturing firms or local authorities should mark every product with proper recyclable code to help people fulfil their ‘Green' duties.
