Possible dangers as buildings lack up-keep

Residential buildings are constantly under attack, not from barbarians or marauding bandits but by a force far more subtle and insidious — Nature. We all know what happens to our bodies as they age; Things shift, material consistencies change and gravity begins to assist itself. The same is true of the buildings we live in.

As time marches on bricks and mortar deteriorate under environmental pressure and everyday wear and tear, sometimes turning a beautiful building into a hulking menace.

I am saddened by the negligence of this building, which is Deira’s landmark in the area known as Nasser Square, from which a chunk of masonry came loose and fell off onto a sign on the street. The consequences of this incident to the safety of pedestrians could have been devastating. Diera is home to some of the best bargain shops and frequented by tourists using its sidewalks. There are many buildings whose future is jeopardised by owners, who have allowed their buildings to fall apart.

This community report is an effort to spotlight neglect on the part of landlords, prevent pedestrians becoming victims of accidents and to transform local eyesores through immediate repairs. Making these improvements will enhance the quality of business environment and desirability of the area thronged by tourists.
