Word choice

The headline about the mall murder in Abu Dhabi is misleading (‘US citizen stabbed to death in Abu Dhabi mall’, Gulf News, December 2). It makes it seem as if the murder occurred at Abu Dhabi Mall, and not a mall in Abu Dhabi. While I understand it’s difficult to find room for an extra two letters, I’m sure the Abu Dhabi Mall would appreciate it.

Wrong mall?

It’s Boutik Mall, not Abu Dhabi Mall. Stop misleading your readers.

We do appreciate that a quick reading of the headline may have given someone that impression, but it was neither the intention, nor actually what the headline communicated. The key to the sentence is in the use of the lower case ‘m’ for mall. If we had used a capital letter, the sentence Abu Dhabi Mall would have been used as a proper noun to describe a specific entity. We actually used a lower case ‘m’ signalling a common noun, used for something nonspecific and general – in this case malls in Abu Dhabi, in general.

No league news

I was very sad to note that Gulf News didn’t have a word about the matches being played in India by the Indian Super League (ISL). Eight teams are contesting for the Cup. Barely a year old, the league needs a lot of media attention and at the same time, newspapers like Gulf News have been ignoring the proceedings, which was never expected. I wish the newspaper would include this in the Sports section.

We had a strong build-up and curtain raiser for the ISL when it started in October, including exclusive interviews with Nita Ambani, the chairperson of the league. We also had an international syndicated feature on the league in our weekend edition (‘The sleeping giant begins to stir’, Gulf News, December 6). On a regular basis, we have run news briefs about it, though some may have been missed out on the odd occasion, because of the late finish. We have also covered the final.
